Finally, a decent recreation of horse race tests! I was worried I was going to have to make one myself. There are a few things that could make it better, though

It would be better if I could place individual horse start positions on a map, instead of only one that the horses all must crowd around in a fixed pattern. Being able to place multiple gates and goals would also be nice.(Edit: I'm stupid you can actually do this, the tutorial was just worded weirdly.)

In addition, MIDI music support (for both win screens and stages) and animated overlays (As seen in HRTTHRT. I suspect that they may actually sprites, but making them part of the overlay would no doubt be easier for you to implement, if a tad inefficient) would also be appreciated.

There are also a few other things, like the lack of the transparent glow on the carrots, the DCT artifacts on the countdown screen, the ending portraits being too bright, and the font and location mismatch on the timer, but I fear I am starting to nitpick.

Still, a masterful recreation that actually feels like HRT, unlike the others I've tried. I look forward to seeing what comes in the future.


Edit 2: I've found an issue where horses with custom sounds and end screens are not loaded properly when choosing a map.

Maybe try to make a “Add background music” button, a “Dump video” button (which means it renders the race [with overlays and stuff] and then dumps the recording to a recordings folder) and Win music for the horses (i dont know if it is whinny sound)

Admittedly, it seems nobody has cleaned up the garbage bin sprite yet, but It's a simple crop job for mysterious figure.

btw, what program do i use? paint.net or paint? i need to resize amf to 32 by 32 pixels and cuz of sometimes the quality is bad!

I have spent numerous hours in this game, and it's good, really good. damn good, probably the best public recreation we have, and it has a really good ui. a few suggestions though.

for starters, and probably one of the easiest changes to implement of my suggestions (just based on coding knowledge), only play the whinny once. the default one can be spaced out the same amount of time you have it spaced out for, but for the love of god only play the whinny once.

another good touch would be maybe to have an extra text box on the side for the three letter abbreviation to have displayed before the race. a key bind to reset the countdown would also be really funny to have, and accurate at least to the tournament. That being said, these are much more difficult to implement, so I'd understand not wanting to do that.

despite all I've said, I really, really enjoy this recreation, and hope to see more on it and more improvements from it, regardless on what you do or don't do with it.

this is an amazing project but I do have a small suggestion. maybe add the functionality to change the map size to whatever you want and have a camera that follows the horses based on what horse you choose to focus on. still a fun game nonetheless.

Question: Will there be an update with perhaps the ability to add music to the races? This is really good, and I love how this is made (Very nice creator used it, SUPER fun! Just kind of awkwardly quiet is all)

So far this is absolutely peak! Only things I would suggest to add are the ability to add music jingles after a horse wins, and to add a toggle for the 3 letter indicators under the horses in races!

that's because you're supposed to pencil tool them at 32x32 natively... It looks so much better when you do that, coming from someone who has made four of them.

why does it crash everytime i try to load in a map, its 640 x 480 and its made in microsoft paint so it shouldnt crash ;-; maybe its the gradients from paint.net doing it

found it was because of colors, sadly my detailed maps arent ever gonna be as detailed (esp my solar system map) but oh well, i dont mind it as long as i get to have a more accurate horse race test

have you tried loading the fully colored maps as the regular maps??? because the maps have to be black for walls and white for the rest, and then the colors r put as overlay

i did, i now redid all of the maps with the gradients and colors i did and now i have gotten it to work

I believe there is a bug where the Victory Screen for every horse either doesn't save or resets for some reason and I don't know what causes it.. There's a chance it may apply to the Victory Whinny and Footstep Sounds but I haven't tested it to make sure.

It would still be nice to have loaded horses persist and not reset every time a map is loaded, it becomes very quickly tedious to re-load every horse one-by-one..

So for some reason it doesn't recognize sometimes when you place a green pixel? Me and a friend checked in photoshop, it's the correct shade of green, yet the games says the gate does not exist for two of us.

Yet for the one who created (lation) it, it works.

bit of an issue.. the game always opening in 2x makes it go off the edges of my screen (my laptop has a wacky resolution) and when i switch to 1x, the top of the game is cut off, meaning i cant move it around. i've tried to use alt+space and win+shift+arrow keys but nothing moves it.. please fix this maybe

In today's update I changed the behavior of window scaling so now you should be able to grab the top when you scale to 1x.

could you add spritesheet support so i only have to upload 1 png? (its kinda annoying to split my spritesheets into 8 diff pngs) cool stuff btw!

i really like this bcuz im trying out a bunch of different *hitbox based horses* and i couldnt test any of them untill now! (the other engines didnt have accurate hitboxes) tysm for making this!

okay i have some questions,,,


1. what software are yall using to make .hrt files/ actually draw the horses

2. how do i add more horses to a map

1: You make the horses inside the game, please refer to the tutorial section. Personally I use Aseprite to draw the horses but any painting program will work

2: To add more horses to a map you need to add more red pixels to the map, each red pixel will add another horse spawned.

How do I make a hrt file to make my own horses? I can't find anything online.

You can click a horse after loading a map, and then just give it pngs.

replace a horse's sprites with your horse sprites of the corresponding direction, then save horse to file

being able to replace the victory images and sounds per horse would be nice, but this is still a pretty cool recreation and it's pretty fun

Hmm that's odd, I tried running the map myself and everything seems to work fine. Are you using the default horses?

You know about hex color codes? I'm no expert, but according to the colorpicker you used FF-00-0F, 01-FF-00, and 0007FF. I think the program specifically checks for FF-00-00, 00-FF-00, and 00-00-FF

You only need one pixel per thing you want to spawn, for example, for each horse you need to put down exactly one single red pixel to determine where it spawns, in your case it will spawn hundred of horses! Also like Voxelroguery mentioned the colors need to be pure red, green and blue. 

Refer to the example maps in the maps folder to get a better idea of what colors it should use and how to distribute them.

Love this, been messing around with it a ton!
